The Hole (1998)

In the final days of 1999, almost everyone in Taiwan died from a strange plague ravaging the island. The disease, presumably spread by cockroaches, plunges its victims into a state of psychosis in which they behave like insects and eventually die. Somewhere in a dilapidated building, a few residents still remain, refusing to leave their homes. Among them is a young man who uses a large hole in his living room floor to spy on his downstairs neighbour, an attractive lady who is hoarding toilet paper…

With THE HOLE (1998), Tsai Ming Liang created a memorable blend of science fiction, romantic comedy and jukebox musical. Amidst dilapidated façades and in the ghostly corridors, songs are performed that transform this apocalyptic time and space.
