New Marilyn, a nightclub in Tokyo's Shinjuku district, serves as the stage for this documentary by Kim Longinotto and Jano Williams. The film follows three trans masculine individuals, Gaish, Tatsu, and Kazuki, in their work as hosts and the relationships they have with the women who visit the club. Gaish is tough and has many girlfriends, but in his heart, he fears becoming lonely. Tatsu lives with his girlfriend and seeks stability and acceptance. Kazuki is in a relationship with a trans woman. The three candidly share their lives, relationships, and fears.
Shinjuku Boys provides an intimate portrait of identity in a heteronormative society. The documentary shows how these men navigate personal and societal expectations. Their stories reflect the struggle and joy that come with embracing their true selves in a society that shows little understanding for non-conformity.
Shinjuku Boys is part of our NEW QUEER CINEMA series, showing in June, July, and August 2024 at De Uitkijk.
