In a small French community in 1870, Rosalie is about to marry Abel, a café owner who is deeply in debt. Rosalie is a young woman with a secret that overshadows her life; she was born with an extreme form of body hair. To improve her chances of marriage, her father has saved a considerable dowry. Abel, the owner of a café near a factory, marries Rosalie without knowing her secret, drawn by the promise of financial relief from his debts. On their wedding night, he is shocked by her appearance and rejects her. Rosalie wants nothing more than to remain married as it is her deepest wish to have a child. To help Abel with his debts, she decides to grow her beard, hoping that it will attract curious customers to his bar. The villagers soon grow fond of Rosalie—especially the girls at a local orphanage, who admire her. But Abel continues to struggle with his feelings and the fear of judgment from others. After an accident at the factory, the mood in the village turns against them. Rosalie, steadfast and resilient, is undeterred by the negative remarks, but her relationship with Abel is at stake.
French director Stéphanie Di Giusto (La danseuse) once again presents a film about an exceptional woman with Rosalie. Di Giusto drew inspiration for this feminist and delicate film from Clémentine Delait, a famous bearded lady and café owner from early 20th century France. Starring Nadia Tereszkiewicz and Benoît Magimel.
