Happy Together is a poetic and intoxicating portrait of a broken love. Lai and Ho travel together through Argentina, caught in a tempestuous relationship full of passion and destructive jealousy. Upon their arrival in Argentina from Hong Kong, they part ways after a fierce argument. Ho (Leslie Cheung) heads to Buenos Aires, while Lai (Tony Leung) takes a job as a doorman at a tango bar, trying to get his life back on track. Despite everything, Lai continues to long for a happy reunion with Ho.
Wong Kar-wai, who won the Best Director award at Cannes, presents a poignant and melancholic story, infused with nostalgia for Hong Kong and a lost past. With the help of cinematographer Christopher Doyle, they weave the rhythms of Buenos Aires and the music of Frank Zappa into a breathtakingly filmed love tragedy. The film was shot on the eve of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong, a time when the country's LGBTQ+ community faced an uncertain future.
Happy Together is part of our NEW QUEER CINEMA series, showing in June, July, and August 2024 at De Uitkijk.
