‘Meshes of the Afternoon’ by Maya Deren and Alexandr Hackenschmied (1943, USA, 14 min)
An experimental short film accompanied by a soundtrack by Teiji Ito (1959). Originally silent, this film was enhanced with a score by Maya Deren's third husband. The film depicts a woman returning home who falls asleep and experiences vivid dreams that blur the lines between reality and fantasy. Through repetitive imagery and a disorienting manipulation of time and space, her innermost desires are laid bare on-screen.
Recognized for its cultural and historical significance, ‘Meshes of the Afternoon’ was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1990.
Maya Deren (1917, Ukraine) played a pivotal role in shaping the New American Cinema movement, influencing contemporary filmmakers like David Lynch, whose film ‘Lost Highway’ (1997) pays homage to ‘Meshes of the Afternoon’.
Afterwards, a simple soup will be served. A soup made by De Sering, following the recipe of Gaza Soup Kitchen, to be eaten at four mirrored locations throughout the city. A meal mirroring to connect worlds.
Mirror Soup Kitchen is a collective by Jasper van den Berg, Jet Sanders and Roel Wouters. The collective cooks soup that mirror recipes from kitchens in countries affected by war. All proceeds go to support locally based initiatives. Additionally, they are interested in mirroring as a behavioural phenomenon.
This programme is free of charge and all donation will go to Soma, an activist performance artist collective from Lviv, Ukraine.
