The Sound of Belgium (2012) explores the rich yet largely unknown story of the Belgian electronic music movement known as New Beat, which took dance floors around the world by storm in the 1980s. The origins of this eclectic precursor to house music have deep and complex roots. Through a dynamic mix of personal testimonies, archival footage, and legendary dance tracks, this vibrant documentary takes the viewer on a journey, revealing how historical and cultural influences came together on the dance floor.
Curated by Atelier Brenda
Atelier Brenda is a restless female designer who lives and works in Brussels. Born in 2012, she is the merged alter ego of two female, independent creative directors —Nana Esi & Sophie Keij—whose body of work is characterised by the spontaneous nature of design and the dynamic interplay between the conscious and the subconscious. In her practice, she continuously seeks to explore and deepen her understanding of the murky world we live in.
Atelier Brenda is the mind behind the Lentekabinet visual identity since 2024. In addition to their worldbuilding practices for Lentekabinet, she is showcasing her Belgian roots by curating The Sound of Belgium on this special evening of Lentekabinet Cinema.
