Tapis Rouge returns to De Uitkijk with Les Quatre Cents Coups, supported by Institut français NL and the IF-cinéma program. The film will be introduced by Pierre-Pascal Bruneau, founder and chairman of Stichting L'Echappée and Tapis Rouge.
Les Quatre Cents Coups, released in 1959, was François Truffaut’s very first film. It is also one of the most representative works of La Nouvelle Vague. This film marked the first appearance of the character Antoine Doinel, played by Jean-Pierre Léaud, Truffaut’s favorite actor, who would go on to star in four more of his films.
The story is largely inspired by François Truffaut’s own life. Antoine Doinel, an unloved child, rebels against his parents and society. Misunderstood and mistreated, he is sent to a reform school, from which he eventually escapes.
Les Quatre Cents Coups won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1959.
