La Jetée (1962) + Sans Soleil (1983) (EN subs)
The visionary French filmmaker Chris Marker (1921-2012) created compelling film essays in which realism was interwoven with science fiction and lyricism with politics. This March, De Uitkijk is screening two of his best works as a combined Sunday classic: LA JETÉE (1962) + SANS SOLEIL (1983).
LA JETÉE is one of the most influential and radical science fiction films ever made, a story about time, memory and a post-apocalyptic future, told in still images.
SANS SOLEIL defies classic narrative structures: it is a diary, travelogue and documentary all in one. Marker's “poetry from the future” consists of an enchanting stream of images from Japan, Guinea-Bissau and Iceland, accompanied by a female voice reading letters from the travelling cameraman.
