Our Sunday classic in March is Barbarella.
It is the 41st century. All alarm bells go off when young scientist Durand-Durand steals a mass destruction weapon. The president of Earth calls upon sexy space adventurer Barbarella (Jane Fonda) to chase after the super villain and bring him back to peace, love, and grooviness. A chase across multiple planets ensues. Barbarella rewards the handsome men who help her in this adventure in an uninhibited way. Whether struggling with Black Guards, the evil Queen, or the Angel Pygar, she always manages to lose a part of her space suit.
Barbarella is camp, a glittery science-fiction adventure in which everything can be portrayed as exaggerated as possible. In fact, that's an absolute necessity. Vadim himself called it "a kind of sexual Alice in Wonderland of the future," and we can only agree with that characterization.
A remake of the film, starring Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney, is currently in the works.
