A postwar classic in which a French actress (Emmanuelle Riva) falls in love with a Japanese architect (Eiji Okada) in Hiroshima, based on a screenplay by Marguerite Duras. The actress and the architect share a traumatic war past: during the war, she had a relationship with a German soldier and was arrested as a collaborator, while the young architect witnessed the horrors of the atomic bomb. Resnais’ feature debut was praised upon release for its unconventional structure; instead of using flashbacks, the director seamlessly intertwined the present with memories of the war.
A 4K restoration of this postwar classic, featuring a screenplay by Marguerite Duras.
