Please note: the screening on November 30 will have Dutch subtitles and will be screened on 35mm. All other screenings of Cinema Paradiso will have English subtitles.
Our beloved colleague and special programmer Inass will be saying goodbye this November after many years of loyal service at De Uitkijk. For her final Sunday classic, she has chosen the classic of all classics: Giuseppe Tornatore’s Cinema Paradiso — a tender, nostalgic ode to the beauty of cinema, the craftsmanship of analogue projection, and the magic of watching films together.
Set in a small Sicilian village shortly after World War II, the film follows a mischievous young boy who becomes utterly fascinated by the local movie theatre. Despite the risks and the strict rules, he repeatedly sneaks into the projection booth to marvel at the work of the projectionist. What begins as childlike curiosity grows into a lifelong passion, as he learns the trade himself and eventually becomes a filmmaker — only to return, thirty years later, to a hometown that’s no longer the same.
During Inass’s final shift as an old-fashioned arthouse cinema usher, on Sunday, November 30, we’ll be screening the film on 35mm — to once again experience the magic of the film reel turning, the light hitting the screen, and a room full of people moved together as one.
